Knowledge & Technology
The scarce resource is not information. It is a packet ready for a decision.
Analysts, sellers, and operators spend hours collecting public and internal fragments, then paste a narrative into a deck. A research bot that produces another unread summary adds cost.

How I see it
Research is only leverage if it produces a packet someone uses
Research automation is useful when the output is a defined packet: an account brief for a call, a vendor comparison for a buy, a credit or deal file, a weekly operating digest someone already waits on.
The work is gathering, structuring, citing, and flagging gaps. Judgment stays with the person who will make the call. The failure mode is a long memo with no owner and no slot on the calendar.
Sales research, competitive monitoring, and internal reconstruction are different volumes. Sales packets usually have the cleaner weekly rhythm. Internal research is valuable when the same questions repeat and the sources can be named.
Define the packet, the sources, the freshness, and where it lands. Evaluate on last month's real requests. Do not start with an open-ended research agent that browses the internet for anyone.
Where the cost sits
Research packet costpackets per week × hours to assemble × loaded cost, plus the cost of a decision made on a stale or incomplete brief
Use one packet type. Decision quality is a second term. Assembly hours are the term you can count now.
Is this your problem?
Five signals the cost is already real.
Which research packet is produced every week from a known template?
If none exists, write the template before you automate. What sources are allowed, and what is out of bounds?
Unscoped browsing is not an operating process.Who uses the packet, and when?
If there is no meeting or next action, you are funding content. How will you know a brief is wrong?
You need an evaluation set from real past requests, not a demo company.Where does the finished packet live?
CRM, deal room, or the brief the team already opens. Not a new library nobody checks.
What done looks like
The result, not the category.
A solution is finished when a named result no longer waits on reconstruction.
Produce the brief
A packet an expert can use — sources, exceptions, and a recommended next step — not another search box.
Someone can decide from the artifact this week.
The system retrieves documents the expert still has to reread.
Someone uses it on live work
The brief enters a real case, a ticket, or a decision. Unused research is inventory.
The artifact shows up in the operating path.
A knowledge base grows and the unofficial path stays Slack.
Stop re-researching the same question
Recurring questions reuse a maintained brief. Experts add judgment, not reconstruction.
Repeat questions do not restart from zero.
Every ask is treated as novel.
What usually fails
How solution shopping wastes a quarter.
Open-ended research with no packet
If you cannot show the template a person already uses, you will get essays.
No citations or gap flags
A confident brief with a missing source will be used once, then abandoned.
Leaving the brief in a chat or a personal doc
If the team still rebuilds the artifact in the official template, you automated a side task.
This is not the problem if
Do not start with a category purchase.
- The research is original analysis with no repeating template.
- Nobody will name allowed sources.
- The output has no slot in a meeting or a working list.
- A shared template and a better filing rule would remove most of the time.
